Isandlwana

British Defeat or Zulu Victory?

David Rattray, a leading historian and a compelling storyteller, is a foremost authority on the Anglo-Zulu war. Armed with an impressive library of detail and backed by years of research, David presents a fascinating account of some of the greatest battles ever fought on South African soil, in particular, those of isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

The battle of Isandlwana engaged over 21, 000 Zulu and British troops and it was here that the might British Empire suffered her most calamitous defeat.

Furthermore, the courageous defence of Rorke’s Drift promted Queen Victoria to award eleven Victoria Crosses to her troops – the largest number ever awarded throughout the history of Britain.

David’s ability to transport his audience to the battlefield and to take them on a thrilling journey with the men who fought the battles makes for an entertaining evening that should not be missed. His imaginative talks are at times lifelike and it seems as if he was there on the ground, fighting for his life and the lives of his comrades.

David’s presentations have a broad appeal and are by no means limited to those with an interest in history. He is a regular guest at the Royal Geographical Society in London where his annual lectures are always a sell-out. As we move through the new Millenium, David’s interpretations of the events at the turn of the century may equip us with an understanding of the dramatic and important changes taking place today, particularly those in KwaZulu Natal.

David is a trustee of the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund, the Magqubu Ntombela Foundation and the Siyasisiza Trust. In January 1998 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London. In June 1999 he received the Ness Award from the Royal Geographical Society.
